Founded in January 2012, the idea for The Sean Ashman Foundation has been in action since 2002.
Sean Ashman is currently serving seven life sentences for a disputed crime, where no one was injured. The reason? He could not afford legal support at the time and was relying on the mercy of the court.
Sean discovered that courts are not always merciful. In fact, they have quotas they must meet, to determine their slice of the annual budget pie. If they don’t get so many convictions they don’t get to keep their jobs. It was quite a surprise to us to find out that courts, judges, attorneys, etc are actually happy when there is a huge backlog of cases. It means job security!
The Foundation would like to change the system of course, but that is a tremendously large undertaking. In the meantime, we wish to assist those who don’t have funds or outside help from family or friends in trying to work within the system.
